We are very excited to announce our new comission for BBC Drama in association with Cuba Pictures – Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, adapted from the award winning international bestseller by Susannah Clarke.
The novel is a sweeping set in 19th-century England around the time of the Napoleonic Wars, based on the premise that magic once existed in England and has returned with two men: Gilbert Norrell and Jonathan Strange.
Centring on the relationship between these two men, the novel investigates the nature of “Englishness” and the boundaries between reason and unreason, in equal parts fantasy, alternative history, and historical novel.
The novel spent months on the New York Times bestseller list and hit Amazons top 10 sales list as well. The novel was nominated in 2004 for the Man Booker Prize and a year later in 2005 was the recipient of the Hugo Award for Best Novel.
This multi-million pound six part flagship drama will be Produced by Nick Hirschkorn, who has decades of experience in Advertising as well as Producing the feature fIlms Five Children & IT and Skellig and Directed by Toby Haynes, one of the UKs most in demand Drama Directors, Five Days, Doctor Who, Sherlock and Wallander are just some of his credits.
Jonathan Strange is to be produced by Feel Films in 2013 and will be on air in the UK and Internationally the year after.
