John Stephenson

John Stephenson has vast experience with visual effects, CG animation, creature-effects, animatronics and puppets, and it’s this background that has shaped his directing style into what it is today.

For over 15 years John was Creative Director of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, designing and making animatronic creatures for films as varied as The Dark Crystal, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Babe.

He drew on this broad experience to launch his directing career, applying his hand to both commercials and feature films involving creature-effects.

In 2000, he helmed award-winning TV feature Animal Farm, and in 2004, he directed Five Children & It, featuring an animatronic ‘It’, voiced by Eddie Izzard.

As a commercials director, John’s strong and imaginative style also takes influence from his visual effects background, and work includes campaigns for Comfort, Lemsip, McDonalds, and Legoland.

In 2003, John was awarded an OBE for services to the British film industry.
